GST Calculator NZ

Use this NZ GST calculator to add 15% GST to a price, remove GST from an inclusive amount, and estimate net GST payable on a return.

For the GST return estimate, enter sales and purchase totals including GST. The calculator extracts the GST portion using the NZ 15% GST fraction.

How it works

Either adds 15% GST to a net figure or extracts GST from a GST-inclusive total. GST applies to most taxable supplies of goods and services. Registration is generally required when turnover exceeds $60,000 per year.

Use the calculator

Use the live tool above to enter a price, choose whether you want to add GST or remove GST, and review the GST-exclusive amount, GST portion, and GST-inclusive total. This page is built for business owners, bookkeepers, contractors, and service providers working with GST-inclusive and GST-exclusive pricing.

  • Know whether quoted prices are GST-inclusive or exclusive.
  • A GST return compares output GST on sales against input GST on purchases.
  • Use the add/remove calculator for invoices and quotes.

GST examples

Adding GST: if a service costs $1,000 before GST, the GST is $150 and the GST-inclusive total is $1,150.

Removing GST: if a customer paid $1,150 including GST, the GST portion is $150 and the GST-exclusive amount is $1,000.

GST return estimate: if GST-inclusive sales are $23,000 and GST-inclusive purchases are $6,900, output GST is $3,000, input GST is $900, and net GST payable is $2,100.

When to use each GST tool

  • Add GST when you know the GST-exclusive price and need the invoice total.
  • Remove GST when you know the GST-inclusive total and need the GST portion.
  • GST return estimate when you want to compare GST collected on sales with GST claimable on purchases.
  • For GST shown alongside income tax and ACC budgeting, use the self-employed tax calculator.
