How to log into myIR
Go to ird.govt.nz and click Log in to myIR at the top of the page. Enter your user ID and password, then complete two-step verification - IRD requires this for all myIR users. You will receive a code by text or through an authenticator app to enter before access is granted.
If you have forgotten your user ID or password, use the Forgot details link on the login page. IRD will verify your identity using your IRD number and date of birth.
How to create a myIR account
If you do not have a myIR account yet, you can register in around 10-15 minutes.
What you need before you start:
- Your IRD number - find it on any IRD letter, payslip, or KiwiSaver statement. If it is 8 digits, add a 0 to the start
- Your date of birth
- Your full name
- An email address
- A mobile number for two-step verification
Steps:
1. Go to the IRD website and click Log in to myIR
2. Select Register and choose personal account
3. Enter your IRD number and verify your identity
4. Choose a user ID and web name
5. Add your email address and mobile number
6. Set up two-step verification
7. Log in and confirm your bank account details for any refunds
Example: Sarah is starting a new job and wants to check her tax code. She registers for myIR using her IRD number from her KiwiSaver statement. Within 15 minutes she can see her income tax account, confirm her bank details, and check which tax code IRD has on file. She uses the full NZ tax codes guide to confirm she is on the right one.
How to add a company IRD account to your personal myIR login
This is one of the most searched myIR questions - and the reason most business owners and directors end up here. Instead of managing separate logins, you can link your company's IRD account to your personal login and switch between them in one place.
Before you start: You need to be the company's account owner, an administrator, or a nominated person. If you are a new director or employee being given access, the account owner needs to add you first.
Steps:
1. Log into your personal myIR account
2. Go to Manage my profile then I want to...
3. Select Manage associated accounts/parties
4. Find the company or IRD account you want to link
5. Click View or edit on that account
6. Select Get account access
7. Choose which tax types you need - GST, PAYE, income tax, or all
8. Submit the request
Once approved, the company accounts appear on your myIR dashboard alongside your personal accounts. You switch between them using the account selector at the top of the screen.
Note: the exact menu labels can vary depending on your role and account type. If you cannot find the option, look under Manage my profile or contact IRD directly.
Example: Ben is a director of two companies and also a sole trader. He links all three entities to his personal myIR login. He can check outstanding GST returns, upcoming payment dates, and IRD messages across all accounts from one place - no logging in and out.
How to add a nominated person
A nominated person is someone you authorise to manage your myIR on your behalf - an accountant, bookkeeper, or trusted employee. They can view your account, file returns, and message IRD, but cannot change your personal details.
To add a nominated person:
1. Log into myIR
2. Go to I want to... -> Manage access and permissions
3. Select Add a nominated person
4. Enter their IRD number
5. Choose which accounts and tax types they can access
6. Submit
The nominated person then logs into their own myIR and accepts the request from their end. If you work with a tax agent, they handle access differently - through their own agent login linked to your IRD number. Find a registered tax agent.

FAQs
Do I need a myIR account?
IRD handles most tax services online and myIR is the main way to access them. For sole traders, company directors, and anyone filing an IR3, it is effectively essential.
Can I use one myIR login for personal and business accounts?
Yes. You can link multiple IRD accounts - personal, company, trust, partnership - to a single login and switch between them from the dashboard.
Is myIR the same as the IRD website?
myIR is the secure logged-in section of the IRD website. You access it by clicking Log in at the top of ird.govt.nz.
Can my accountant access my myIR?
Yes - through the nominated person or tax agent process. They manage access from their own myIR account and you approve it from yours.
Does myIR work on mobile?
Yes - myIR works through any mobile browser. No separate app is required.
What if I have two IRD numbers?
You should only have one. If you think you have been issued two, contact IRD to have them consolidated - having two active IRD numbers can cause issues with your tax records.
General information only - myIR screens can change. Check ird.govt.nz for account-specific help or call IRD on 0800 775 247. Last updated July 2026.
