How to Find a Tax Agent in New Zealand 2026

Learn when a tax agent is worth it, what to check before choosing one, and how to find an IRD-registered tax agent in New Zealand.

Updated 5 July 2026

Updated July 2026. Key filing-date facts checked against IRD tax agent guidance and IRD extension of time arrangements.

A tax agent files your returns on your behalf and deals with IRD directly. You do not need one if your tax situation is straightforward, but if you are self-employed, own rental property, have overseas income, or simply want someone else to handle it, a good tax agent can be worth the cost.

Do you actually need a tax agent?

What a tax agent actually does

IRD says income tax returns without an extension of time are generally due by 7 July, while tax agents' clients can be given an extension of time to file up to 31 March the following year.

What to look for when choosing one

Check they are IRD-registered
Only an authorised tax agent or intermediary can link to your IRD account and act for you. IRD says tax agents must have a myIR account and can have individuals or entities as clients.

Look for relevant experience
A tax agent who works mostly with rental property owners will know property rules better. One who specialises in sole traders will know provisional tax and GST filing inside out. Ask specifically about your situation before signing up.

Understand their fees
A straightforward individual return may cost a few hundred dollars. Self-employed clients, rental owners, companies, trusts, overseas income, or overdue returns usually cost more. Get a quote before you start.

Check turnaround time
Some agents are very busy around March, April, June, and July. Ask how quickly they respond and when they normally file returns for clients.

How to find an IRD-registered tax agent

Start with IRD's tax agent information and make sure the person or firm can act for your tax type:

You can also search professional bodies. Membership is not the same as IRD registration, but it can be a useful quality signal:

How to authorise a tax agent with IRD

Once you choose an agent, they usually request access through myIR or ask you for authority to act. Make sure you understand what tax types and accounts they can access. You can change or remove authorisation if you switch agents.

FAQs

How much does a tax agent cost in NZ?
Costs vary. A simple individual return may be a few hundred dollars, while self-employed, rental, company, trust, or overseas-income situations usually cost more. Always ask for a quote.

Can I switch tax agents mid-year?
Yes. Make sure your old agent gives you copies of past returns and working papers, and check that your myIR authority is updated.

Do tax agents guarantee a refund?
No. Be careful with anyone who promises a refund before they have reviewed your actual income, expenses, and tax already paid.

What is the difference between a tax agent and a bookkeeper?
A bookkeeper manages day-to-day records such as invoices, expenses, and bank reconciliation. A tax agent files returns and deals with IRD. Some firms do both.

What happens if my tax agent makes a mistake?
You are still responsible for your own tax position, but a good registered professional should help correct errors and explain what happened. Ask about insurance and review processes before you engage them.
