Updated July 2026

Every year between late May and July, IRD runs an automatic income tax assessment for most New Zealand employees. If more PAYE was deducted from your pay than your actual tax liability for the year, IRD owes you a refund. Most people do not need to file a return, but you still need to check myIR and make sure your bank account details are correct.

Here is how it works, why you might be owed money, and how to claim it.

Why you might get a tax refund

PAYE is deducted from your pay each week or fortnight based on your income at that employer. It does not always account perfectly for your full-year position.

Common reasons people end up overpaying:

  • You worked for multiple employers during the year
  • You changed jobs and had a gap in employment
  • You were on the wrong tax code, for example M instead of ME
  • You had a significant drop in income mid-year
  • You made donations to approved NZ charities and never claimed the 33.33% tax credit
  • You were eligible for the Independent Earner Tax Credit (IETC) but your employer did not apply it

> Example: Sarah works two jobs during the year. Her main job pays $38,000 and her part-time job pays $9,000. Her part-time employer deducts PAYE using a secondary tax code. At year end, IRD checks her full income and tax paid. Her assessment shows a $340 refund.

How IRD processes refunds - automatic vs IR3

Most salary and wage earners - IRD automatically assesses your income tax between late May and the end of July using PAYE data from your employer. You do not need to file a return. IRD sends you a notice in myIR showing whether you are owed a refund or have tax to pay.

Self-employed people, contractors and rental owners - you usually need to file an IR3 tax return by 7 July. Your refund is calculated when IRD processes it. If you have a registered tax agent, the deadline may extend to 31 March the following year.

How to check your refund in myIR - step by step

1. Go to ird.govt.nz and log into myIR
2. Select Income tax from your account summary
3. Look for your income tax assessment for the 2025-26 tax year
4. Review the assessment - it shows total income, tax paid, and whether a refund or bill is due
5. If a refund is showing, confirm your bank account is registered under Profile > Bank accounts
6. Accept the assessment if IRD asks you to confirm it

IRD pays refunds into the bank account they have on file when they process your income tax assessment, so not everyone gets theirs at the same time. They will let you know if they do not have your bank account details.

If your assessment has not appeared yet, check myIR for any request for more information.

How far back can you claim

You can generally claim refunds for up to four tax years back. Anything older than four years is usually outside the refund period.

To check prior years, log into myIR, go to Income tax, and select the relevant year. If you need to file a return for that year, myIR will show the available options.

Things that increase your refund

Donation tax credit - if you donated to approved NZ charities, schools, or hospitals during the year, you can claim a 33.33% tax credit. A lot of people miss this entirely.

> Example: Tom donated $600 to two charities during the year. His donation tax credit is $200, which can increase his refund.

Claim it through myIR by filing an IR526, or include it in your IR3 if you are filing one.

Independent Earner Tax Credit (IETC) - worth up to $520 per year if your income is between $24,000 and $70,000 and you are not on Working for Families or a main benefit. If your employer did not apply it through your tax code, it may show up in your end-of-year assessment.

Wrong tax code - if you were on M instead of ME, or used the wrong secondary code on a second job, IRD's assessment may correct the overpayment and create a refund.

Refund vs tax bill - what triggers a bill

Not everyone gets a refund. You may end up with a bill if:

  • You had multiple income sources and were under-deducted across them
  • You earned income that had no PAYE deducted, such as rental income, self-employment income or overseas income
  • You used the wrong tax code and paid too little

Most people need to pay their tax bill by 7 February the year after receiving it. If you cannot pay in full, IRD offers instalment arrangements - contact them through myIR before the due date.

If your residual income tax for the year is more than $5,000, you may need to pay provisional tax going forward.

Should you use a tax refund company

Several companies advertise NZ tax refund services and charge a percentage of your refund as a fee. You can usually do the same thing for free through myIR.

There is no benefit to using a third party for a straightforward PAYE refund. myIR is free, and IRD pays directly to your bank account.

Estimate your refund before IRD does

Want to estimate the number? Use the TaxPop tax refund calculator - enter your gross income and PAYE deducted for the year and it shows whether you may be owed a refund or have tax to pay.

FAQs

When does IRD issue tax refunds in NZ?

IRD sends most automatic income tax assessments from late May to the end of July after the tax year ends on 31 March. Refunds are paid once IRD has processed your assessment and has your bank account details.

How long does a tax refund take?

Refund timing varies. IRD pays it once your assessment is processed and your bank account is confirmed.

Why have I not received my assessment yet?

IRD processes assessments in batches. If yours has not arrived by late July, log into myIR and check whether IRD needs more information.

Can I get a tax refund if I am self-employed?

Yes, but you usually need to file an IR3 return. Your refund or tax bill is worked out when IRD processes the return.

What if I never claimed refunds from previous years?

You can generally go back up to four tax years. Check prior years in myIR and file any missing returns if required.

Do I need a tax agent to get a refund?

No. For a standard PAYE refund, you can usually check and confirm details yourself in myIR. A tax agent may be useful if you have business income, rental property, overseas income, or several missing years.
